CYCLING: THE ULTIMATE CARDIO WORKOUT FOR THE WHOLE BODY

Imagine working your heart, lungs, muscles, mind, and soul in unison. Stationary Indoor Cycling is a cardiovascular workout for the whole body led by an instructor and set to music that utilizes a special stationary bicycle. It started in California in the mid '90s and spread to New York, Miami and all over the world in the next few years. The word "spinning" has been trademarked by a California company but is  used to describe this exercise discipline.

Ivan Trinidad, who moved to Augusta from Miami, actually invented his own version of this popular activity. He took the original concept and added his own twists, resulting in a full body workout where you burn anywhere from 1400 to 1800 calories an hour. That's about twice as many as the standard stationary indoor bicycle classes at most gyms.

Utilizing custom stationary bikes with 40-pound flywheels connected directly to the pedals, high energy music blasted through a world-class sound system, wailing sirens, flashing lights and even a disco ball, classes at Ivan's Gallery are an experience not found anywhere else in the Augusta area.

While the atmosphere is all flash and fun, the bikes themselves have no bells and whistles, no computers, no calorie counters, no buttons or digital displays. They are stripped down to the barest essentials and equipped with a single gadget ... a twist knob for changing the pedaling resistance. This allows each rider to decide the proper level of difficulty for any part of the workout and makes it possible for people of all shapes and sizes, all ages, all backgrounds and all ability levels to train together in an exciting communal environment.

Ivan and his trainers put the program together, play the music and call the shots from a raised platform in front, but every rider is free to ride his own road.
